Sonya-Prajna Artist Statement
I am Sonya-Prajna, an intuitive and Spiritual artist, painting magick. I create art from my sacred, heart-centered altar that reveal energies of the Unknown and Unseen into stylized portraits and paintings that evoke transformational feelings. My craft unfolds through symbols, messages and marks as alchemy at the soul level. My body of works portray the journey of one who desires to understand, gain insight and share what is discovered with the world. Creating imagery from Ancestors’ touch, I am a never-ending student, where The Sage continues to evolve as an advocate in partnership with the well of creativity.
Sonya-Prajna Artist Bio
As a forever student on a quest to gain knowledge and skills, Sonya-Prajna holds degrees in various fields as a Ph.D., Doctorate and Master’s degree holder, along with numerous certifications. She has always had a fascination with learning, and from that insight, enjoys teaching and providing guidance to others. Her thirst for scholarly skills stemmed from the knowledge of recognizing that her Ancestors were not so free to learn and grow educationally. She believes that each positive movement forward enhances her generational legacy and bloodline.
Even while pursuing an eclectic education, Sonya-Prajna found time to create within various artistic modalities and discovered that she had an innate ability to paint portraits at the age of forty-nine. Through seeking and creative endeavors, she discovered Milan Art Institute, where she learned to hone her painting skills. Via painting, she realized her love of portraiture, and became mesmerized by how faces intuitively emerged with each brushstroke, even when sources were used as her initial muse. She realized that her portraits magickally surfaced and become who the world should see by appearing on the canvas.
The paintings rendered by Sonya-Prajna emit unspoken emotions and thoughts that lure the viewer in by means of her ability to paint magick. Using intuition, while recognizing that all our Ancestors hold the key to our natural abilities, she weaves ancestral knowledge into the Unknown and the Unseen into stylized portraits and paintings. Her art, which is embedded with covered messages, symbols, collage and brushstrokes, are created from the heart and express how she seeks insight into understanding others and as a way for her work to captivate and transform.
Sonya-Prajna mainly represents BIPOC persons as her body of work since she experiences the world through this perspective and observant lens. Through her imagery, she is able to weave and capture the unspoken feelings within the eyes of her subjects, where the viewer is taken into the realm of nostalgia or pondering thoughts. Sonya-Prajna strongly feels that BIPOC representation is vital to allow diversity to flourish within the art world, and beyond.
Sonya-Prajna completes her works in her quaint and organized studio where the walls are draped with inspiration, color and art completed by her muses and mentors. Pink is her favorite color, so she tries to bring the color into her space and her body of work. Daily, she escapes into her personal studio, which is her sanctuary, as part of her meditative and creative practice.
She is a single mom to an adult guitarist and composer. She has three cats, two dogs and two snakes, which she calls “her crew.” And, in her spare time, she enjoys painting, reading, writing poetry, divination and creating sacred items and tools with her hands.
Sonya-Prajna is looking forward to continuing to learn, creating painting series, teaching art, teaching metaphysical subjects, and traveling.
